Given:
Mass of cylinder M=20 kg
Apparent weight of cylinder in water,
Mw=8 kg
Area of cylinder, A=5 m2
Density of water (ρw)=1000 kg m3
Let's assume the length of cylinder=l
Volume of cylinder =V
Loss of weight in water of cylinder, =MMw=208=12 kg

We know that,
According to Archemedes' Principle loss in weight of body in the water is equal to the weight of displaced water by the body.

(MMw)×g=(Vρw)×g
12=A×l×1000
12=5×l×1000
l=125000=0.0024 m=2.4 mm
