Question

A cylindrical block of density d stays fully immersed in a beaker filled with two immiscible liquids of different densities d1 and d2.The block is in equilibrium with half of it in liquid 1 and the other half in liquid 2. Solution

The correct option is A It executes SHM
Let A and a be the cross-sectional area and the height of the block respectively.
Volume of the block V=Aa
Initially, the block is in equilibrium with half of it in liquid 1 and the other half in liquid 2.
Using Archimede's principle, Mg= Weight of liquid displaced
(Vd)g=(V2d1)g+(V2d2)g ...............(1)
Now the block is displaced by x units downward.
Thus the net change in force F=(Vd)g(A(a2+x)d2g+A(a2x)d1g)
where V=Aa, d2>d1 and using (1),
F=(d2d1)AgxFx
Hence it executes SHM.
