Question

A cylindrical drum of height 1 m made of a bad conductor is completely filled with water at 0C and is kept outside without a lid. The temperature of the surroundings is 10C. Calculate the time taken for the entire mass of the water to freeze. (Thermal conductivity of ice =k, latent heat of fusion Lf=L)
[Neglect expansion of water on freezing, ρ = density of water]

Solution

The correct option is C ρL20k
At t=t0, let the height of the ice formed from the top of the drum be x and area of the top of the drum be A.
At t=t0+dt, additional dx length of ice will be formed.

The amount of heat flow from the water to the surroundings in the time interval dt is
dQ=kA[0(10)]x×dt
dQdt=kA×10x ....(i)
Let dm amount of water be converted into ice in the same time interval.
Then, dm=ρAdx
& dQ=Ldm
Divide both sides by dt
dQdt=Ldmdt ...(ii)
From equation (i) and (ii),
Ldmdt=kA(10)x
L(ρAdx)dt=kA(10)x
Lρdxdt=10kx
Integrating on both sides,
Lρh0xdx=10kt0t=0dt
t0=ρLh220k
Given h=1 m
Therefore, t0=ρL20k
