Question

A cylindrical vessel is divided in two parts by a fixed partition which is perfectly heat conducting. The wall and piston are thermally insulated from surroundings. The left side contains 0.5 moles of gas with Cv = 2R at temperature of 300 K. The right side contains 4 moles of mixture of gas with Cv = 1.75 R at same temperature of 300 K. The piston compresses slowly the right side from volume of Vo to Vo4. If total change in internal energy of gases is ΔU=n×104J., find n.
(Take : R=253 S.I unit)

Solution

a)
n1Cv1dT+n2Cv2dT+PdV=0
12×2RdT+4×7R4dT+4RTdVV=0
2dTT+dVV=0
2ln(T300)+ln(14)=0
lnT300=ln2
T=600 K

b) Change in internal energy
ΔU=12×2R×(600300)
+4×7R4(600300)
=8R×300
=8×253×300=2×104 J
