Question

(a) Define covalent and ionic bond. [2 Marks]
(b) The table below gives some information regarding elements D, E, F, G and H.

(i) Will the compound formed by E and F have ionic or covalent type of bonding? [1 Mark]

(ii) Give the structure (electron dot diagram) of molecule E2 . [1 Mark]

(iii) Identify the elements that can form ions having the electronic configuration of noble gas neon (atomic number 10). [1 Mark]

Solution

(a) Ionic bond :The electrostatic bond or ionic bond formed between two different atoms (usually a metal or a non-metal), such that metallic atom donates all its electrons from the valence shell and the non-metallic atom/atoms accept these donated electrons, with the formation of cations and anions which mutually bind each other with e;lectrostactic force of attraction is called electrovalent bond or ionic bond. [ 1 Mark]

Covalent bond: A chemical bond formed between two non-metallic elements by sharing electron pair/pairs from the valence shells of reacting atoms, such that both the atoms acquire the electronic configuration of nearest noble gas is called molecular bond or covalent bond. [ 1 Mark]

(b)
(i) The compound formed by E and F will have an ionic type of bonding. As E is highly electronegative and F is highly electropositive. [1 Mark]

(ii) Element E have 7 electrons in its outermost shell so the valency or the combining capacity of element E is 1. Then the molecular structure of element E is:
[1 Mark]
(iii) Elements E and F can form ions with electronic configuration of neon.

electronic configuration of neon = 2, 8.
electronic configuration of E = 2, 8.
electronic configuration of F+ = 2, 8.
[1 Mark]
