(a) An element is a substance that is made up of only one kind of atom, and cannot be split using any chemical means.

  • An atom is the smallest unit of an element.
  • For example - Silver. Gold, Hydrogen, etc.

(b) Some characteristics of an element are as follows -

  1. A pure substance made up of only one type of atom is referred to as an element.
  2. An element cannot be separated into two or more smaller pieces unless during nuclear processes.
  3. The smallest unit of an element is an atom. It displays all of that element's characteristics.
  4. Elements can be found in nature in their free state or in the form of their compounds.
