  • Democracy is a rule of the people, for the people and by the people. By principle a democratic government should be able to accommodate the views of all kinds of people living in the society and also prevent oppressive and unjust forces that might control the government.
Representative democracy:
  • In representative democracies people choose their representatives through an election process. All adults over 18 years of age, whether man or woman, rich or poor, illiterate or educated, whatever their religion or language, vote in these elections.
Rule of majority:
  • The person who gets the largest number of votes becomes the representative of the entire group. These elected representatives meet and make decisions on behalf of the entire Population.
Checks on elected representatives:
  • In a democracy, the authority of the people who get elected is regulated by certain principles which are stated in the constitution of the country. If they go against these principles or procedures, the courts can disallow their decisions. Free expression of views and criticisms on the elected representatives can be done through meetings, TV, newspapers, etc.
  • With these principles it is ensured that views of all kinds of people are accommodate while preventing opressive and unjust forces from controlling the government.
