Question

A dentist uses a small mirror that gives a magnification of 4 when it is held 0.60 cm from a tooth. Find the radius of curvature of the mirror.

Open in App
Solution

Given:
Object distance u=0.60 cm (Since the dentist-mirror is a concave mirror)
Magnification m=+4
Radius of curvature R=?

Magnification m=vu

4=+v0.60

v=4×0.60

v=2.4 cm

From mirror formula, 1f=2R=1v+1u

2R=12.410.60=1.25

R=21.25=1.6 cm

So, the radius of curvature of the mirror is 1.6 cm.
