Question

A diatomic molecule has a dipole moment of 1.2D. If its bond distance is 1.0˚A, what fraction of an electronic charge exists on each atom? Plan based on dipole moment of 1.2D, electronic charge is calculated. This value is compared to theoretical value of charge (=4.8×1010esu).

Solution

For a diatomic molecule dipole moment μ=e×d
electronic charge =μd=1.2×1010esucm1.0×108cm
=1.2×1010esu
actual value of electronic charge =4.8×1010esu
fraction of the electronic charge =1.2×10104.8×1010=0.25
