A differential band brake as shown in figure, has torque capacity of 3000 N-m. The thickness of the steel band is 3 mm and the maximum tensile stress in the band is 50 N/mm2. The coefficient of friction betwenn the friction lining and the brake drum is 0.25. Caluculates width of the band.

(T1T2)×0.3=3000

T1T2=10000......(1)

T1T2=e(0.25×4π/3)

T1=2.85T2......(2)

From (1) and (2)

T1=15405.4N

T1=σb×W×t

15404.4=50×W×3

W=102.7mm
