Question

A dilute solution of KCl was placed between two Pt electrodes 10.0 cm apart, cross which a potential difference of 6.0 volt was applied. K+ ions move x cm in 2 hour at 25oC, then x is__________. (nearest integer)
Ionic conductivity of K+ at infinite dilution is 73.52Scm2mol1 at 25oC. (Write your answer to the nearest integer)

Solution

λK+=73.52
Ionic mobility uK+=λK+F=73.5296500

=7.619×1014 cm2 sec1 volt1

Potential gradient applied =6.010=0.6 volt cm1

Speed of K+= Ionic mobility × pot. gradient
=7.619×104×0.6 cm sec1

=45.714×105 cm sec1

Distance travelled by K+ in 2 hour
=45.714×105×2×60×60=3.292 cm
