A disc of mass m and radius R is attached to a rectangular plate of the same mass, breadth R and length 2R as shown in the figure. Find the moment of inertia of this system about the axis XX passing through the centre of the disc and along the plane.

Given,

Mass=m,radius=R,bredth=R,length=2R

So, MI of the disc about the axis XX' is

I=(mR2A)

MI of the plate about AB

IAB=mR212

From parallel axis theorem,

IXX=IAB+m×(R+R2)2=mR22+m×(BR2)2=mR22+94mR2=114mR2

Thus, Itotal=mR22+11mR624=3mR2
