A drawing board is 45 cm long and 20 cm board. A 3 cm wide border has been left along all four sides and a picture drawn inside it. What is the area of the border?

Let XYZW be the drawing board with a border along it measuring 3 cm. from the given information, we get the figure EFGH that is also a rectangle.
Length of XYZW = 45 cm
Breadth of XYZW = 20 cm
Area of XYZW = length × breadth
= 45 × 20 cm2
= 900 cm2
Now there is a border measuring 3 cm.
∴ Length of EFGH = 45 − 3 − 3 cm = 39 cm
Breadth of EFGH = 20 − 3 − 3 = 14 cm
Area of EFGH = length × breadth
= 39 × 14 cm2
= 546 cm2
Area of the border = Area of XYZW − Area of EFGH
= 900 cm2 − 546 cm2
= 354 cm2
