(i) forms an anion, (ii) forms a cation,

(b) State the type of bond between Y and Z and give its molecular formula.

Solution

(a)Electronic configuration of X - 2,4
Electronic configuration of Y-2,7
Electronic configuration of Z-2,8,2
(i) The element Y will form an anion(Y) as it will gain 1 electron to complete its octet and form a -1 charge.
(ii) The element Z will form a cation(Z+2) as it will lose 2 electrons to form a +2 charge.
(b) Electronic configuration of Y-2,7
Electronic configuration of Z-2,8,2
The bond form between Y and Z will be an ionic bond, as Z will donate its two-electron to two atoms of Y. Each atom of Y will accept one electron to complete its octet.
Formulae will be - ZY2
