Question

(a) Explain the following in terms of gain or loss of oxygen with one example each :

(i) oxidation (ii) reduction

(b) When copper powder is heated strongly in air, it forms copper oxide. Write a balanced chemical equation for this reaction. Name (i) substance oxidised, and (ii) substance reduced.

Solution

(a)
(i) Oxidation: A chemical reaction in which a substance gains oxygen is called oxidation.

Example:
2 Cu space plus space straight O subscript 2 space space space rightwards arrow with Heat on top space 2 CuO space left curly bracket Cu space is space oxidised space to space CuO. right curly bracket
2 Mg space plus space straight O 2 rightwards arrow with space space space space space space burn space space space space on top space 2 MgO space left curly bracket space Mg space is space oxidised space to space MgO right curly bracket

(ii) Reduction: A chemical reaction in which a substance loses oxygen is called reduction.

ZnO+CZn+CO( ZnO is reduced to Zn.)

CuO+H2Cu+H2O, (CuO is reduced to Cu.)

(b)
Balanced chemical equation is:

2Cu+O22CuO

(i) Copper is oxidised to copper oxide. It means addition of oxygen.
(ii) Oxygen is reduced to copper oxide. It means addition of metal i.e reduction.
