Question

A family uses 5 CFLs of 10W each for 10 hours every day, 5 fans of 100 W each for 15 hours every day, an air conditioner of 2kW for 10 hours every day, a washing machine of 1kW for 3 hours every week. Calculate the amount of electrical energy in kWh consumed by the family in a year.

Solution

Step 1: Given

For CFL,

Power,P1=10WTime,t1=10hours/dayNo.ofCFLs,n1=5

For fans,

Power,P2=100WTime,t2=15hoursNo.offans,n2=5

For the air conditioner,

Power,P3=2kWTime,t3=10hours/dayNo.ofACs,n3=1

For the washing machine,

Power,P4=1kWTime,t4=3hours/weekNo.ofwashingmachines,n4=1

Step 2: Total energy consumption by CFLs

Let the energy consumption by CFLs in a year be E1.

E1=P1×t1×n1×365=10W×10hours/day×5×365days=10×10×5×365=182500Wh=182.5kWh

Step 3: Total energy consumption by fans

Let the energy consumption by fans in a year be E2.

E2=P2×t2×n2×365=100W×15hours/day×5×365days=100×15×5×365=2737500Wh=2737.5kWh

Step 4: Total energy consumption by air conditioners

Let the energy consumption by air conditioners in a year be E3.

E3=P3×t3×n3×365=2000W×10hours/day×1×365days=2000×10×1×365=7300000Wh=7300kWh

Step 5: Total energy consumption by washing machine

Let the energy consumption by washing machine in a year be E4.

E4=P4×t4×n4×52=1000W×3hours/week×1×52weeks=1000×3×1×52=156000Wh=156kWh

Step 6: Total energy consumption by the family in a year

Let the total energy consumption by the family in a year be E.

E=E1+E2+E3+E4=182.5kWh+2737.5kWh+7300kWh+156kWh=10376kWh

Hence, the total energy consumption by the family in a year is 10376 kWh.
