Question

(a) Find the nature, position and magnification of the images formed by a convex lens of focal length 0.20 m if the object is placed at a distance of:
(i) 0.50 m
(ii) 0.25 m
(iii) 0.15 m

(b) Which of the above cases represents the use of convex lens in a film projector, in a camera, and as a magnifying glass?

Solution

(i) u = -0.50 m = -50 cm
f = 0.20 m = 20 cm
Lens formula:
1f=1v-1u120=1v-1-501v=120-1501v=5-21001v=3100v=1003 cmThe image will be at a distance of 33.3 cm on the right side of the mirrormagnification m=vum=33.3-50m=-0.66magnification is negative therefore image will be real and inverted.

(ii) u = -25 cm
f = 20 cm
1f=1v-1u120=1v-1-251v=120-1251v=5-41001v=1100v=100 cm The image will be formed at a distance of 100 cm behind the mirrror.Magnification, m=vu m=100-25 m=-4Magnification is negative, which means the image is real and inverted.

(c) u = -15 cm
f = 20

Substituting these values in the lens formula, we get:1f=1v-1u120=1v-1-15120=1v+115120-115=1v1v=3-4601v=-160 v=-60 cmThe image will be formed at a distance of 60 cm in front of the mirror.m=vum=-60-15m =4Magnification is positive; therefore, the image is virtual and erect.

(b)
We can use case (ii) for a film projector.
We can use case (i) for a camera.
We can use case (ii) for a magnifying glass.
