Question

A fly wheel of gasoline engine is required to give up 300 J of kinetic energy while its angular velocity decreases from 600 rev/min to 540 rev/min. What moment of inertia is required?

Open in App
Solution

Given that,

Kinetic energy K.E=300J

Angular velocity ω1=600rev/min=62.83rad/s

Angular velocity ω2=540rev/min=56.55rad/s

We know that,

K.E=12I(ω21ω22)

300J=12I(62.8356.55)

I=6006.28

I=95.5kgm2

Hence, the moment of inertia is 95.5kgm2
