Question

A football of mass 0.5 kg is kicked by a player with a velocity of 5 m/s before reaching to another person of his team.He returns it by kicking, along its original path with velocity of 6 m/s.Calculate the magnitude of change in linear momentum of the football due to second kick.

Solution

Initial momentum of the ball after kicking for the first time = mu=0.5×5 =2.5 Kg ms-1. Final momentum of the ball after kicking for the second time = 0.5×6=-3Kg ms-1.Therefore change in momentum= -3 - 2.5=- 5.5 kg ms-1.
