Question

A force acts on a body and displaces it by a distance S in a direction at an angle θ with the direction of force. What should be the value of θ to get the maximum positive work?

Solution

The value of θ to get maximum positive work

Work doneW=FScosθ

Here, F is force, S is displacement, θ is angle of the force that acts on a body.

  1. Work done is maximum and positive when cosθ=1.
  2. At zero degree of angle the value of cosθ=1, i.e., θ=0°.
  3. The displacement by the force on the body should be in the same direction of the force acts on that body.

Therefore, the value of θshould be 0° to get the maximum positive work
