Question

A force of 5N gives a mass M1 an acceleration of 8.0m/s2 and a mass M2 an acceleration of 24m/s2. What acceleration would it give if both the masses are tied together?

Open in App
Solution

For the first body,
F=5N
mass=m₁
a=8m/s²

Now, F=ma
So, 5=m₁ * 8
So, m₁=5/8 kg

For second body,
F=5N
mass= m₂
a=24 m/s²

Now, F=ma
So, 5=m₂ * 24
So, m₂=5/24 kg

Combined mass of both bodies, m₁+m₂= 5/8 + 5/24
= (15+5)/24
= 20/24 kg

Now, m= 20/24 kg
F= 5N
a= ?

F=ma
So, 5= 20/24 * a
So, a=5*24/20
So, a= 6m/s²

Thus the acceleration produced will be 6 m/s²
