Question

A force of 5N gives a mass m1 an acceleration of 8 m/s2 ,and a mass m2 an acceleration of 24 m/s2. What acceleration would it give if both the masse's are tied together.

Please explain step by step.

Solution

We know the base equation F=ma
m = mass
a = acceleration
F = force = 5 N
For the mass m1 acceleration a1=8m/s2
F=m1a1
5=m1×8
m1=5/8kg=0.625kg
Simlarly for m2 the F gives an acceleration a2=24m/s2
5=m2a2
5=m2×24
m2=5/24=0.2083kg
if m1 and m2 both are tied together then mass will be M=m1+m2=0.833
F=Ma
a=F/M=5/0.833=6m/s2.
