Question

A force F=v×A is exerted on a particle in addition to the force of gravity, where v is the velocity of the particle and A is a constant vector in the horizontal direction. With what minimum speed a particle of mass m be projected so that it continues to move undeflected with a constant velocity?

Solution

Given that, F=u×A and mg act on the particle
For the particle to move undeflected with constant velocity, net force should be zero.
(u×A)+mg=0
(u×A)=mg
Because, (u×A) is perpendicular to the plane containing u and A,u should be the xz plane
Again u Asinθ=mg
u=mgAsinθ
u will be minimum when sinθ=1θ=90o
Umin=mgA along Z axis.
