A fraction becomes 45, if 1 is added to both numerator and denominator. If, however, 5 is subtracted from both numerator and denominator, the fraction becomes 12. What is the fraction?

Let the fraction be xy.

Then, according to the given conditions, we have

x+1y+1=45 and x5y5=12

5x+5=4y+4 and 2x10=y5

5x4y+1=0 and 2xy5=0

By using cross-multiplication, we have

x4×5(1)×1=y5×52×1=15×12×4

x20+1=y25+2=15+8

x21=y27=13x=213=7 and y=273=9.
