A freight train and a passenger train leave the same stations at noon and travel in opposite directions. If the freight train travels $52 m p h$ and the passenger train travels $84 m p h$ , at what time are they $680$ miles apart?

Solution

Since they are travelling in opposite direction , the relative speed between them is $52 + 84 = 136$ mph
The distance relative traveled is $680$ miles
Therefore the time taken is $680 / 136 = 5$ hours
