Mature human RBCs are roughly circular and non-nucleated. Absence of nucleus imparts RBCs a biconcave disc-like shape. The concave surface of RBC increases the surface area of the cell and facilitates the diffusion of oxygen and carbon dioxide in and out of the cell.
