Question

A Galvanic cell is composed of two hydrogen electrodes, one of which is a standard one. In which of the following solutions should the other electrode be immersed to get maximum emf.

  1. 0.1 M CH3COOH

  2. 0.1 M HCl

  3. 0.1 M H3PO4

  4. 0.1 M H2SO4

Solution

The correct option is A

0.1 M CH3COOH

Lower the concentration of of H+ ion, lower the reduction potential of

hydrogen electrode, hence higher the emf with standard hydrogen

electrode .

CH3COOH will furnish minimum H+.
