Question

A galvanic cell is constructed with Ag+/Ag and Fe3+/Fe2+ electrodes. The concentrations of Ag+ at which the e.m.f. of the cell is zero at equimolar concentration of Fe2+ and Fe3+. Write answer as nearest integer after multiplying it with 10.
Given EoAg+/Ag=0.80V and EoFe3+/Fe2+=0.77V

Solution

For equimolar concentrations of Fe2+ and Fe3+, EFe3+|Fe2+=E0Fe3+|Fe2+=0.77V
The expression for the potential of the half electrodes.
EAg+|Ag=E0Ag+|Ag0.0592nlog[Ag+]
Substitute values in the above expression.
0.77=0.800.05921log[Ag+]
log[Ag+]=0.800.770.0592=0.5067
[Ag+]=0.31, the concentrations of Ag+ at which the e.m.f. of the cell is zero at equimolar concentration of Fe2+ and Fe3+.
