Question

A galvanometer has a current sensitivity of 10 div/mA and a voltage sensitivity of 2 div/mV. The instrument has 20 divisions. How can it be converted to
a) an ammeter reading upto 2 amperes, and
b) a voltmeter reading upto 20 volts?

Solution

Si=10div/mA=10×103 div/A
Sv=2div/mA=2×103 div/V
θ=20 division
I=2A
V=20V
The resistnace of the galvanometer,
G=SiSv=10×1032×103
G=5Ω
The current sensitivity is Si=θIs
Is=θSi=2010×103
$I_s=2\times10^{-3}$
The shunt resistance is,
S=Is×GIIs=GIIs1
S=522×1031
S=52×10321
S=5200022
S=101998
S=0.005Ω
The high resistance is,
R=VIsG
R=20×10325
R=20000102
R=9995Ω
