Question

A gas cylinder can hold 1 kg of hydrogen at room temperature and pressure:
What weight of CO2 can the cylinder hold under similar conditions of temperature and pressure? (H=1,C=12,O=16).

Solution

A gas cylinder can hold 1 kg
The mass of hydrogen =1kg×1000g/kg=1000g.
The molar mass of hydrogen is 2 g/mol.
The number of moles of hydrogen present =massmolar mass=1000g2g/mol=500mol.
The number of moles of CO2= the number of moles of H2=500 moles.
The molar mass of CO2=12+2(16)=44 g/mol. The mass of CO2=500mol×44g/mol=22000g
Convert the unit from g to kg.
22000g1000g/kg=22kg.
