Question

A gas cylinder containing cooking gas can withstand a pressure of 14.9 atm. The pressure guage of the cylinder indicates 12 atm at 27oC. Due to sudden fire in the building, its temperature stats rising. At what temperature cylinder will explode?

Solution

P1=12bar,T1=27+273=300K
P2=14.9 bar,T2=?
Applying pressure temperature law,
P1P2=T1T2
or T2=T1×P2P1
Substituting the values in the above equation,
T2=300×14.912=372.5K
Temperature in 0C=372.5273=99.5C

Hence the cylinder will explode at a temperature 99.5C
