Question

A gas exerts pressure on the walls of the container. Give reason.

Open in App
Solution

→ The particles of gases do have a very large intermolecular space between them.

→ The particles of a gas are constantly moving in all the directions of the container at different speeds hence colliding with the walls of the container as well as with each other.

→ When particles collide they collide with a certain force.

→ This force per unit area is the called pressure of the gas.

→ Hence, gas exerts pressure on the walls of the container.
