Question

A gas having one carbon atom in its molecule is collected by downward displacement of water. It burns with a blue flame and the resulting gas turns lime water milky. Name the gas and state its two properties based on the above observations. Write the chemical equation of the reaction that takes place when this gas burns in air.

Solution

Name the gas: The gas is Methane (CH4) is the only alkane having single carbon atom.

Two properties based on the observations:

  • It is less dense and insoluble in water, hence it is collected by downward displacement of water.
  • Methane serves as a good fuel, undergoing reaction with Oxygen (O2) leading to the formation of Carbon dioxide (CO2)and Water vapor(H2O).

Chemical equation of the reaction that takes place when this gas burns in air.

The above combustion reaction can be represented as given below:

CH4gMethane+O2gCO2gCarbondioxide+H2OgWatervapor

Carbon dioxide gas turns lime water milky because of the formation of Calcium carbonate(CaCO3).
