Question

A gas is found to have the formula (CO)X if its vapor density is 70. Find the value of X.

Open in App
Solution

Step: 1 Introducing the formula:

Given: V.D(CO)X=70

MolecularWeight=2×VapourDensity

Step: 2 Calculating the Molecular weight of the compound (CO)X

MolecularWeight=2×VapourDensityMolecularWeight=2×70MolecularWeight=140u

Step: 3 Calculating the value of X

Since CO is Carbon and Oxygen and their atomic weights are known and they are 12 u and 16 u.

(CO)X=140X(12)+X(16)=140X(28)=140X=14028=5

Therefore, the value of X is 5.
