A gas occupies a volume of 400 cm3. On heating to 127°C its volume becomes 1600 cm3.Find the initial temperature of a gas on Celsius scale. Assume pressure remains constant.

Step 1- Write down the given terms:

V1 = 400 cm3

V2 =1600 cm3

T2 = 127°C = 127 + 273 = 400 K

T1= ?

Step 2- Write the formula:

Using Charle’s law,

V1T1= V2T2

Step 3- Put the given values

T1 = 400x4001600

= 100 K

Temperature in °C = 100 – 273 = -173 °C

Hence, the initial temperature is -173 °C.
