A gaseous alkane is burnt completely in oxygen. The volume of O2required for complete combustion to the volume of CO2 formed is 7:4. Determine the formula for alkane. [Alkane is CnH2n+2]
In organic chemistry, you have learnt that general formula of an alkane is CnH2n+2.
When an alkane is burnt completely burnt in O2,
CnH2n+2+[n+n+12]O2→nCO2+(n+1)H2O(1)
Given that vol of O2 requiredvol of CO2 formed = 74
n+(n+22)n = 74
n = 2
∴ The alkane is C2H6
