Question

A gaseous mixture having 4 mole of H2 and 6 mole of I2 on heating shows equilibrium concentration of HI as 2 mole. If we start with 4 moles of H2 and 9 mole of I2 at the same temperature, how many mole of HI will be formed? Also calculate degree of dissociation of HI at this temperature.

Solution

H2+I22HI
(a) initial 4 6 0
Eqb. (4x) (6x) 2x
Put, x=1
3 5 2 Kc=223×5
(b) initial 4 9 0
Eqb. 4x 9x 2x Kc=(2x)2(4x)(9x)
At same tempKc=Kc
43×5=4x2(4x)(9x)15x2=x2+3613x14x2+13x36=0
x>0x=1.205
number of moles of HI=2x=241
Degree of dissociation 2HIH2+I2
K=1Kc
K=x22(1x)
x22(1x)=3×54
2x2=1515x
2x2+15x15=0
x>0 x=0.8935
Degree of dissociation of HI=0.8935
