Question

A gaseous mixture of helium and oxygen is found to have a density of 0.518 g dm3 at 25C and 720 torr. What is the per cent by mass of helium in this mixture?

Solution

We know that, Pm=dRT
720760×m=0.518×0.0821×298
m=13.37 g/mol
Let mole fraction of He in mixture be α.
xHe=α,xO2=(1α)
Average molecular weight =α×MHe+(1α)MO2
13.37=α×4+(1α)32
α=0.666
% by mass of He=0.666×40.666×4+0.334×32×100
=19.95%
