Question

A geyser heats water flowing at the rate of 3.0 litres per minute from 27 °C to 77 °C. If the geyser operates on a gas burner, what is the rate of consumption of the fuel if its heat of combustion is 4.0 × 10⁴ J/g ?

Solution

Given, the water is flowing at a rate of 3.0 litre/ min , temperature changes from 27 C to 77 C and the heat of combustion is 4.0× 10 4 J/g .

Let specific heat of water be c.

Let Q be the total heat used, then

Q=mcΔT

Here, m is the mass of water flowing, ΔT is the temperature change.

Substitute the values in the above expression.

Q=3000×4.2×( 7727 ) =6.3× 10 5 J/ min

Let R be the rate of consumption of the fuel, then

R= Q heatofcombustion

Substitute the value in the above expression,

R= 6.3× 10 5 4× 10 4 =16g/ min

Hence, the rate of combustion of the fuel is 16g/ min .
