Question

A girl was playing with a beam of light from a laser torch by directing it from different directions on a convex lens held vertically. In a particular direction, the beam of light continued to move along the same direction after passing through the lens.

1. State the reason for this observation.

2. If the white light source is used with

a. parallel
b. non parallel sides, record your observations

Solution

1. A ray of light passes undeviated through the optical centre of the lens.It means that the ray of light passes along the same direction after passing through the optical centre of the lens.
2. If white light passes through a transparent object with parallel sides it refracts laterally as in case of a glass slab. While passing through a transparent object with the non-parallel side the light refracts and disperses. The example of this case is the prism.
