Question

A given mass of a gas occupies 919 mL volume in dry state at STP. Same mass of the gas collected over water at 15C & 750 mm of pressure occupies a volume of 1 L. Calculate vapor pressure of water at 15C.

Solution

Let us consider the
Pdrygas=Ptotal=Pwatervapour
Given that:
(At STP)
V1=919mL
V2=100mL
P1=760mmHg
P2=?(drygas)
T1=273K
T2=273+15=288K
Ptotal=750mmHg
Using gas equation
p1v1T1=p2v2T2
implies that
760×919273=p2×1000288
implies that
p2=736.82mmHg
Hence
Pdrygas=PtotalPwatervapour
implies that
Pwatervapour=750736.82
13.18mm
