Question

A glass rod is rubbed with silk. In which direction, the electrons will move? What kind of charge is developed on glass and silk?

Solution

  1. Glass when rubbed with silk, acquire a positive charge because glass has higher frictional order than silk.
  2. Glass rode has a greater frictional factor as compared to silk, so it will acquire a positive charge and silk will acquire a negative charge.
  3. When an atom gains electrons, i.e., a number of electrons in an atom is greater than the number of protons, it develops a negative charge.
  4. When an atom loses electrons, i.e., when the number of electrons in an atom is less than the number of protons, it develops a positive charge.
  5. So the flow of electrons will take place from glass rode to silk.
