Question

A graph is plotted between PVm along Y-axis and P along X-axis at particular temperature, 300 K, where Vm is the molar volume of N2 gas. Calculate the intercept along Y-axis. (Take R=0.0083 kJ K1 mol1)

Solution

We know, the van der Waal equation (for one mole) of a real gas is:
(P+aV2m)(Vmb)=RT
PVmPb+aVmabVm2=RT
PVm=RT+PbaVm+abVm2
To calculate the intercept P0, hence Vm, due to which the terms aVm and abVm2 can be neglectred.

PVm=RT+Pb
Thus the intercept along Y axis is
=RT=0.0083×300=2.49 kJ mol1
