On the day the fountain is complete, the group will place a ribbon around the outside of the circle to be cut in a ceremony. How many feet of ribbon will they need? Assume that the ribbon is placed 6 inches outside of the edge of the fountain, all the way around. (Take π=3.14).

Solution

The correct option is B 97.3 feet
If the statue is at the center of the circle, then the distance from the statue to the outside of the fountain is the radius. But the ribbon will enclose a circle that has a radius 6 inches, or half a foot, larger than this. Therefore we should use:

r=15.5 feet

Circumference of the circle =2πr

=2×3.14×15.5

=97.3 feet
