A group of students wanted to conduct Mendels’s experiment to have a first-hand experience of his observations. Which sequence of the following events will they have to follow?
Mendel selected the garden pea plant for his experiment. The selection of specimen should be the first step. This should followed by the identification and selection of the traits of the plant to be looked for in the offspring.
On the selected pure breeding plants, emasculation should be performed. Emasculation is the removal of the stamen to avoid self-fertilisation in the flower. Mature pollen grains collected from the desired true breeding plant should be then brushed off on the stigma of the emasculated flower.
The pollinated flower is then covered with a bag to prevent contamination by other pollen. This process is called bagging.
The flower is then tagged or labelled. The seeds produced post fertilisation should then be collected and germinated to know the results.
Thus the correct sequence would be 5→4→3→2→1
