Question

A group of students while coming from school noticed a box marked "Danger H.T. 2200 V" at a substation in the main street. They did not understand the utility of a such a high voltage, while they argued, the supply was only 220 V. They asked their teacher this question the next day. The teacher thought it to be an important question and therefore explained to the whole class.
Answer the following questions:
(i) What device is used to bring the high voltage down to low voltage of a.c. current and what is the principle of its working?
(ii) Is it possible to use this device for bringing down the high dc voltage to the low voltage ? Explain.
(iii) Write the values displayed by the students and the teacher.

Solution

(i) Transformer:

A transformer is a static electric device that transfer electrical energy between two or more circuits through electromagnetic induction. The main principle of operation of a transformer is mutual inductance between two circuits which is linked by a common magnetic flux. A basic transformer consists of two coils that are electrically separated and inductive but are magnetically linked through a path of reluctance.

(ii) No

Because transformer does not work in DC. It can work only in AC. Direct current doesn’t have aa variable magnetic field if fed through primary winding of a transformer. Thus only a constant magnetic field will act on the secondaries and shall not induce any voltage across the terminals of the same.

(iii) Transmission is done in high voltage in order to reduce the loss.
