A guy attached a wire to a vertical pole of height 18m is 24m long and has a stake attached to the other end.How far from the base of the pole should the stake be driven so that the wire will be taut?

Let height of vertical pole =AB=18m

Let the length of wireAC=24m

Since the pole will be perpendicular (vertical) to ground

ABC=90

ABC is a right-angled triangle.

So, in right-angled triangle ABC

Using Pythagoras theorem,

AC2=AB2+BC2

242=182+BC2

BC2=576324=252

BC=36×7=67m

Hence, the stake may be placed at a distance BC=67m, from the base of the pole.
