Question

A heater A gives out 300 W of heat when connected to a 200 V d.c. supply. A second heater B gives out 600 W when connected to a 200 V d.c. supply. If a series combination of the two heaters is connected to a 200 V d.c. supply the heat output will be (in watt).

Solution

Given,

For AP1=300 W; V1=200 volt

For BP2=600 W; V2=200 volt

We know that, P=V2R

Then, RA=(200)2300

RB=(200)2600

In series combination,

Req=RA+RB

Now net power in series is,

Peq=V2Req

Peq=(200)2(200)2300+(200)2600

Peq=200 watt
