Question

A heating element using nichrome connected to a 230 V supply draws an intial current of 3.2 A which settles after a few seconds to a steady value of 2.8 A. What is the steady temperature of the heating element if the room temperature is 27.0C? Temperature coefficient of resistance of nichrome averaged over the tempature range involved is 1.70×104 C1

Solution

Step1: Find intial resistance.

Given, supply voltage V=230 V
Initial temperature T1=27C
Intial current drawn at temperature T1,I1=3.2 A

Intial resistance at temperature T1,R1=VI1

R1=2303.2=71.87 Ω

Step 2 : find resistance at steady state temperature.

Let steady state temperature be T2

Steady state value of current at temperature T2,I2=2.8A

Resistance at temperature T2,R2=VI2

R2=2302.8=82.14 Ω

Step3: Find steady state temperature.

Given, temperature coefficient of nichrome, α=1.70×106 C1

Using the formula R2=R1(1+α(T2T1))

T2=T1+R2R1αR1

T2=27+82.1471.871.70×104×71.87

T2=27+840.5

T2=867.5 C

Final answer: Steady temperature of the

heating element is 867.5C.
