Question

A heavy ball of mass M is suspended from the ceiling of a car by a light string of mass m(m<<M). When the car is at rest, the speed of transverse waves in the string is 60 ms1. When the car has acceleration a, the wave-speed increases to 60.5 ms1. The value of a, in terms of gravitational acceleration g, is closest to:

Solution

The correct option is B g5
Wave speed, V=Tμ

When car is at rest a=0T=mg

60=Mgμ(1)

Similarly, when the car is moving with acceleration a, a horizontal pseudo force acts on the mass in addition to vertical mg,

T=(Mg)2+(Ma)2

60.5=M(g2+a2)1/2μ(2)

Dividing (2) by (1)

60.560= g2+a2g2

(1+0.560)4=g2+a2g2

Using Binomial expansion,

1+260=g2+a2g2

g2+a2=g2+g2×260

a=g260=g30

Which is closest to g5

Hence, option (B) is correct.
